DISCREET MISSION, 2013 16h chestnut gelding

Located at Finger Lakes Race Track, Farmington, NY (near Rochester)

This handsome solid bodied guy is affectionately known as “Rudy,” and he is a much-loved favorite in this trainer’s small stable. At the age of 8, Rudy hasn’t got his heart in the game as much as he used to, although his trainer stated that he loves to train and always reaches into the bridle and is great to gallop. We admired his stout build with massive shoulder and hind end, set off by his beautiful face. He does have an old set bow that he has raced on for years with no lameness, and old osselets that don’t bother him.  showed some beautiful movement for his jog video, although he was feeling a bit happy on a brisk morning. His connections relay that he is one of the nicest horses they have ever worked with, has no vices and is an all-around good boy. His trainer reports that last year when things were shut down due to COVID, she took Rudy on trail rides out of her farm, and that he was great. She says he is a very intelligent horse, and that he loved getting out and about in the countryside. She also says that at the farm he turns out well with other horses, and is kind and easy for her mother, who is not a horsewoman, to handle. Sold as a $90,000 yearling at the Fasig Tipton Saratoga sale, Rudy has earned $110,000 on the racetrack with 30 lifetime starts, 4 wins, 4 seconds and 3 third place finishes. He is by Discreet Cat, who has sired several horses who are excellent brave and scopey jumpers, succeeding in eventing and jumpers.  Do not overlook Rudy just because he is older — he still has a lot left to give and can be your all around partner for fun for many years.

CATSKILL RIVERS, 2018 16h chestnut filly

Located at Finger Lakes Race Track, Farmington, NY (near Rochester)
The trainer raved about this flashy lightly raced daughter of Frost Giant:  “she’s a sweetheart, a love bug, a peppermint lover, and she’s going to be a flashy show horse.”  We agree! Catskill Rivers won a race in only her second start this past spring, but since she then had to move into racing conditions with other winners,  she has had less success and her trainer thinks her aptitude lies in the sport horse world. She describes this filly as very sound, and as a horse who loves attention and grooming — “not your stereotypical chestnut mare at all!” the trainer says. Catskill Rivers showed off very good movement for her jog video, with a light flatter kneed trot that should do well in the hunter ring.  We listed her half brother (out of same mare) last year and he too was a beautiful mover, and is now in a H/J show barn where everyone adores him. Frost Giant offspring are very popular in the eventing world, and they tend to be very good movers and good jumpers.  Catskill Rivers is still growing, and should top out at a bit above 16h.  When she fills out she is going to be quite eye-catching with all her chrome.  She is fully eligible for the 2022 RRP, and we would love to see her shine there next fall.

LUTHERAN RAGS, 2015 15.3h dark bay stallion

Located on a farm in Shortsville NY, near Finger Lakes Race Track
Gorgeous, kind, smart, and very well bred, this stunning son of Union Rags out of a Smart Strike mare would make an excellent stallion to cross with warmblood mares for a sport horse breeding program.  But he can also make an excellent sport horse in his own right — he could do double duty.  His owner/trainer describes him as a very well behaved and smart horse who does not act studdish and is friendly with people. For his photo session he handled him with just a lead rope, and no chain, even though he had just been moved to his farm from the track. He also reported that Lutheran Rags is good to ride (he has ridden himself) and has been trained to go in a frame and use his back and engage his hind end — the owner/trainer comes from a show background.  He thinks Lutheran Rags would excel in dressage.  Lutheran Rags has been with his current owner/trainer for a couple of years, and in his 7 races this year he has a win and a second.  Overall he has 20 starts with 2 wins and 6 placings and over $100,000 in earnings. Three years ago Lutheran Rags had surgery to remove chips from his right knee, and he was properly rehabbed, and as noted successfully returned to racing this year. The knee is cold, and has not bothered him after races this year, but there is residual scar tissue.  Lutheran Rags showed very good movement jogging on uneven grass, without hind shoes — he has a lofty way of going with good reach from the shoulders and an even rhythm.  The owner/trainer adores

Lutheran Rags, and can tell that he doesn’t have the same level of competitiveness that he had when younger and winning at the maiden special weight and allowance level at the top NYRA tracks, so he does not want to keep racing him next year. While he thinks the horse has the mind and steady temperament to make a track pony horse, he does not have time for that, and he knows that Lutheran Rags is too talented to be a pasture pet on his farm. He said his ideal placement for his beloved gorgeous boy would be in a program that wanted to ride and show him as well as use him for breeding. But as nice and kind as he is as a stallion, he would also be an awesome gelding. His bloodlines are well worth reproducing. He is by Belmont winner and top sire Union Rags, who is by Dixie Union (a son of Dixieland Band) out of a Gone West mare. Lutheran Rags’ dam — who is out of a graded stakes winning mare — is by perennial leading sire Smart Strike, who has many sons such as superstar Curlin who are excelling as sires, and who is well known as a top broodmare sire as well. The Dixie Union/Dixieland Band/Gone West lines, and the Smart Strike lines are also well known for producing top sport horses who are good jumpers and movers with good minds.

FAST AN FIRST, 2018 16.1h bay gelding — Placed

This young flashy gelding checks all the boxes! He’s young, he’s a good size, and his trainer reports he’s very levelheaded for a 3 year old! “Tucker”, as they call him, is a trainer favorite.  He’s stated to be a pleasure to work around, and a favorite to gallop.  He’s all business under saddle, a straightforward ride, and his only vice is that he paws out of boredom in his stall.  He’s a barn favorite that unfortunately does not show any talent as a racehorse.  Our volunteers admired his uphill build and glossy coat. While a bit playful for his jog, he was no nonsense for his photo shoot and was all too happy to plant his feet and quietly graze while we chatted with his race connections.  If you want a horse that has as much brain as he has beauty, Tucker is the horse for you!

Moonshine Maker 2017 16.1h chestnut gelding –placed

MOONSHINE MAKER, 2017 16.1+ chestnut gelding

Located at a farm in Victor NY very close to the Finger Lakes Race Track

This flashy young gelding is what everyone says they want:  eye catching good looks, solid bone, young, lightly raced, clean and sound, good mover, good temperament, great sport horse pedigree, unlimited potential for many new careers!  And at the bargain price at which he is offered, we think this guy will get snapped up very quickly, so if you are interested we recommend acting fast.  Moonshine Maker is with one of our favorite track trainers, for whom we have helped place many high quality horses over the years who are now excelling as show hunters, jumpers, eventers, and dressage horses.  They tell us that Moonshine Maker just isn‘t showing enough racing ability to persist with him on the track, and that he is sound with a good attitude and temperament and is good to handle. He has only 9 starts, and  no wins and just one second place finish – so racing is not where his aptitude lies. He has an uphill build with a strong shoulder, and in his jog video he shows good engagement from behind, and an even rhythm and loftiness that suggest he could excel in many sport disciplines.  His pedigree is ideal for jumping disciplines. His sire is Discreet Cat, and we have placed several Discreet Cat offspring over the last several years who have all turned out to be amazing scopey and brave jumpers.  His dam is by Smoke Glacken, who is a sire coveted in both eventing and H/J disciplines. When looking through Making Moonshine’s pedigree, we see all the sires that make up the dream sport horse pedigree:  Smoke Glacken, Two Punch, Private Account, Damascus, Pleasant Colony, Saint Ballado, Halo, Roberto.  Because he is at the trainer’s private farm, which is just a few miles from the track, you must call to make an appointment if you want to see him. But we think the farm visit will be well worth your time!

SPROLES, 2018 16.1h bay gelding

Located at Finger Lakes Race Track, Farmington, NY (near Rochester)

If you are an experienced OTTB restarter looking for an upper level prospect, then this handsome lightly raced gelding should be on your radar screen.  Named after the star NFL running back, Sproles the horse can gallop all day, but he doesn’t have the breakaway speed of his human namesake.  In his 5 lifetime starts he has yet to hit the board.  But the stamina to attack a cross country course – yep, he’s got it. His trainer told us about a time when he got loose on the track during morning training, and he galloped 4 times around – 4 miles!—before he was corralled, and he wasn’t even breathing hard after his marathon romp. Sproles has an uphill build with a strong shoulder, and his cute snip and star complement his regal presence. For his jog video he showed very good movement, with a flowing big step at the walk and a light balanced trot with suspension and reach.  We photographed him just 3 days after a race, and he showed no post-race tightness.  His trainer says he is very sound, and we observed clean legs.  She also says that Sproles will do best with a very experienced rider who can keep him in a regular program and give him turnout, because he can be rambunctious when he hasn’t done anything for a few days. She also states that Sproles is still a bit of a young punk, the teenager impressed with himself who hasn’t yet mentally and physically matured.  But if you can channel that high energy and stamina into the right direction, we see exciting upper level potential with this guy.  Sproles is by Dominus, who is a son of Smart Strike out of a Lord at War mare.  His dam is by One Nice Cat. He is fully eligible for the 2022 RRP.

CARMEN LUZ, 2016 15.2+h gray mare — Placed!

Located at Finger Lakes Race Track, Farmington, NY (near Rochester)

A barn favorite (especially by the trainer’s young daughter who shares her name!) the friendly, solid bodied and sweet Carmen Luz is unraced and a blank slate for any new career.  Her trainer described Carmen Luz as a “very good girl who does everything right.”  She also said she is very sound – just too slow to be a racehorse.  Carmen is described as a very easy keeper – as you can see from her chunky physique.  She’s a TB in a QH body!  She jogged very politely showing shorter strided movement that makes us think western and trail disciplines, or polo would be right up her alley. This adorable gray girl wants to be with someone who will be her bet friend.  The trainer reports that over the winters, when Carmen goes back to her breeder’s farm, she is turned out in a large group of mares, and gets along well in the group. She is by Honorable Dillon, a son of Tapit, and she is out of a Proud Citizen mare, from the Gone West line.

HOARD, 2015 16.3h bay gelding

Located at Finger Lakes Race Track, Farmington, NY (near Rochester)

What an impressive big athletic guy, and he’s got a top notch sport horse pedigree!  Cleverly named, his sire is Super Saver, from the coveted Maria’s Mon sire line (rated in an RRP Off-Track thoroughbred magazine article as one of the very best sires for sport horses), and his dam Clever Conversation is by superstar sire Speightstown, who is a son of Gone West, one of the top sires for jumping/sporting disciplines.  Hoard exudes upper level potential for sport horse disciplines. He is clean legged (we felt his ankles which were cold and tight) , and has an impressive uphill build with a strong shoulder that just shouts “top eventing or jumping prospect!” His handler who showed him to us, who is also the contact person for the language-challenged owner/trainer, told us that Hoard is very smart and sweet.  She has ponied him to the races in the afternoon, and says he is a perfect gentleman.  She also reports that when his owner/trainer walked him around their common shedrow, she offered him peppermints from the bucket that her barn always keeps handy, and Hoard quickly learned where to stop and look for his treats, and now he seeks her out and stops to nuzzle. We got to observe first hand how friendly and kind Hoard was with her, as you can see in the photos. Hoard showed a flowing big walk, and a trot with good engagement from the hind end and reach from the shoulders.  Hoard was sold for $75,000 as a two year old – check out his listing on pedigree query for gorgeous conformation photos from the yearling and 2 yo sales.  He has proven to be a durable and successful race horse, with 7 wins and 7 seconds in 38 starts and nearly $150,000 in earnings.  While he is still running well, his owner/trainer likes to be a “one horse stable,” and he prefers mares, and he just claimed a mare, so Hoard is ready to find his new person for a new discipline.  Hoard is a volunteer favorite, well worth the price, with what we think is bright sport horse career ahead of him.

NO SENSE, 2017 15.1h dark bay gelding

Located at Finger  Lakes Race Track, Farmington, NY (near Rochester)

This handsome fellow is just as much of a charmer as his kind eye and sweet “baby face” would suggest. He is described by his connections as an easy keeper, who has no stable vices and is easy to work with. He likes to go to work on the track, but they predict that he will settle into a post track career with ease because of his laid back attitude in the shed row. “Sensy” as he is called by his friends, has raced 7 times this season, hitting the board 6 of those times (including two wins) but his trainer feels it’s best for him to step down from racing as his competitive edge seems to be waning and the company he’d need to keep on the track is getting faster. His trainer reports that he is sound, and although he was due for the farrier at the time of our meet and greet and was missing a shoe for his jog, he did trot nicely for his video. He displayed a fluid trot with lightness and good rhythm. He is fully eligible for the 2022 RRP. Our volunteers could picture this adorable gelding in a pleasure home, but he certainly has the athleticism to go any direction. He is solidly built and will take up the leg of a taller rider.  He has an excellent pedigree. He is by top sire and Derby winner Street Sense, and his dam Blush is a stakes producer sired by Menifee out of a Rahy mare. Dixieland Band, Blushing Groom, His Majesty, and Halo are other notable sport horse sires in his pedigree.  We have placed a couple of Street Sense offspring over the years who are excelling in eventing at the Prelim level and above.

DIXIE QUEEN, 2017 16+h chestnut filly

Located at Finger Lakes Race Track, Farmington, NY (near Rochester)

This classy young lady wooed our volunteers with not just her stunning looks and flashy dapples, but also her charming demeanor and friendly disposition. Her handler describes her as good to work around and good to gallop, but just not quick enough to make it as a race horse. She has 16 starts, with one win, and that second win is proving to be too elusive to make it worth persisting at the track. She is fully eligible for the 2022 RRP. Since her last race in mid-August she’s been swimming at the backside pool for the last few weeks and she was due for a farrier appointment, so she was missing a few shoes, but she still showed a great trot for her jog video. Per her trainer, she is described as sound with no stable vices. Our short meet and greet left us believing that this adorable gal would make a great addition to any sporthorse program, and her breeding shows great promise as well. Dixie is by Afleet Alex, who is known for siring horses with great ammy friendly brains and good movement and jumping ability. Her dam is by Dixie Union, who is a son of Dixieland Band, out of a Kingmambo daughter.

MUNSOOR, 2017 16h grey gelding

Located at Finger Lakes Race Track, Farmington, NY (near Rochester)

We know how much people love the gorgeous grays, and Munsoor certainly fits that description!  This striking looking young gelding is described by his trainer as good to handle with no bad habits.  He says that Munsoor has an old chip in his right knee, that he has been racing on.  The trainer said that recent x-rays could be made available.  The trainer said that after his last race he came back a bit sore on his knee, so he decided it was time to stop on Munsoor and let him find a new home and new career.  We photographed and took his videos about a month after his last race, and while he was “up” from not having done anything in the last few weeks, he was very respectful of his handler and while he showed at the jog that he still needs more time off, we could see  hints of the potential he has. When we photographed and took his videos, he was very overdue for farrier attention, with very long toes up front, and no shoes behind.  We think that with some good farrier work and some additional R &R time off before patiently restarting, Munsoor could have many new career options.  Munsoor is sired by Bandbox, a son of the great Tapit, and he is out of a mare by Ecclesiastic, a son of Pulpit (AP Indy) who is a half brother to the great War Front.  This is definitely a pedigree with sport horse aptitude. Munsoor is fully eligible for the 2022 RRP.

MISERY MASTER, 2018 16+h chestnut gelding

What a misnomer for one of the sweetest horses we have ever encountered — he will bring all joy and not a bit of misery to the person lucky enough to scoop this flashy young guy up. MM just oozes the look and movement and temperament of a fancy show hunter, and that is the discipline where we think he will shine.  He has had only 5 starts, and it is evident that racing is not his game.  He is very friendly, quiet and laid back, and would prefer a new job where running fast isn’t part of the job description. Still growthy, he is likely to top out close to 16.2. His legs are completely clean, he has good feet and solid bone, and he has no vices — except for nuzzling and cuddling too much.  For his jog video he showed beautiful lofty movement with a slow rhythm and the lower head carriage and flat knees admired in the hunter ring.  His sire is Majestic City, a son of City Zip.  His dam, Simply Preferred, is by Good and Tough.  He is fully eligible for the 2022 RRP.

BEST SURPRISE EVER, 2017 16.1h bay gelding

Located at Finger Lakes Race Track, Farmington, NY (near Rochester)
Best dapples ever, and such a gorgeous guy! And while we are on “ever” superlatives, his trainer told us that he is “the sweetest horse ever in the world!”  This gorgeous young gelding has had one win in 5 races, and since he broke his maiden he is not showing any competitiveness at the next racing conditions level.  His trainer told us that while the horse is sound and clean legged, they have had trouble keeping shoes on him — he kept overstepping from behind and pulling off his front shoes. So to help grow out the hoof wall in his front feet they recently put glue on shoes on him, and they think that once he has grown his wall strongly enough to get out of the glue ons, he should be fine for conventional nail on shoes.  But they do advise that anyone who gets “BSE” have a good farrier to work with who understands TB feet. His trainer informed us that “BSE” also has occasional stringhalt  in the left hind leg, more evident when he has not been in regular work, and rarely exhibited when he is warned up and trotting or galloping on the track.  She told us that the exercise riders report that he is lovely and smooth to ride and they have never felt any hitch in his gait.  On the day we photographed “BSE” he had not galloped or worked in about ten days , and he did show some  stringhalt high steps in his left hind  as he walked out of his stall and out into the road. But, as is evident in the jog video, once he got trotting he moved very nicely.  He is a very friendly and affectionate horse who eagerly accepted treats and loved the attention.  He was a perfect gentleman for his photographs and jog video, and his trainer kept raving about what a kind and sweet horse he is, wonderful to deal with. If you are not looking to win show hunter under saddle classes or rated dressage tests, where an occasional stringhalt high step could knock you out of the ribbons, but you are looking for a sound, gorgeous, sweet young gelding who could be a great jumper, fox hunter, hunter pace or pleasure or trail horse, “BSE” presents an enticing bargain opportunity.  His connections — some of our favorite people on the track who always represent their horses honestly — care deeply about getting this lovely dappled sweetheart a good home, and references will be required and checked.  Best Surprise Ever is by Giant Surprise, a son of Giant’s Causeway, and his dam is by Stephen Got Even, a son of AP Indy.

FUSILLI, 2016 17h chestnut gelding

FUSILLI, 2016 17h chestnut gelding
Located at Finger Lakes Race Track, Farmington, NY (near Rochester)
Wow, does this gorgeous horse check all the boxes:  big, young, flashy, sound, lightly raced, athletic, outstanding sport horse pedigree — and a luscious name, evocative of your favorite pasta dish!  (We have already nicknamed him “Pasta Man!”) Fusilli has had a total of only 16 races, and after his initial win earlier this year, he has shown little success at the next level of racing competition.  He is fully eligible for the 2022 RRP. The assistant trainer who showed him to us says that he is sound —  we observed clean legs– and also good to handle with no vices.  She also reported that he is good to gallop with no antics,  and stays nicely settled when he is in regular work. He is just stunning when you see him in person, and we admired his huge sloping shoulder and strong hind end with good hip angles.  We met and photographed him 4 days after his most recent race, and since that race he had only walked the shed row, so he was a bit up when brought out into the rain for his jog video. But even though his handler could not let him stride out, we could see that he has a powerful push from behind that suggests that jumping and cross country galloping will be right in his wheelhouse.  Due to his size and power and relatively young age, we think he is best suited for experienced riders who have higher level aspirations. To add to the upper level potential displayed by his physique and movement, his pedigree just screams “top level sport horse!” His sire is Freud, a full brother to Giant’s Causeway (a leading sport horse sire), and known in his own right as a sire of successful eventing, jumping, and dressage horses.  Fusilli’s dam is by Value Plus, a son of Unbridled’s Song, and is out of a mare by Halo’s son Saint Ballado.  His pedigree is replete with all the coveted sport horse sires:  Unbridled’s Song,  Halo, Rahy, Blushing Groom, Pleasant Tap, Roberto.   Fusilli presents a rare opportunity to get a very big young gelding with a top level sport horse pedigree and potential, in a gorgeous and eye-catching package!

TRULY FUNNY, 2015 16.2 h bay mare

TRULY FUNNY, 2015 16.2 h bay mare
Located at Finger Lakes Race Track, Farmington, NY (near Rochester)
Truly gorgeous, truly classy — and that’s no joke!  Her trainer — for whom we have placed many quality horses into top level careers in show hunters, eventing, and jumping — kept raving about how much he loves this mare.  He wishes he could keep her forever, but now, after winning a race in early June, she is facing tougher racing conditions and they realize it is best to let her move on while she is happy and sound. She is built like a tank with solid bone, a powerful hind end, deep girth, and strong shoulder. and clean legs. She glows with dappled good health, and she showed a strong push from behind in her jog video.  Her groom reports that she is great to work with, and that if you bond with her, she will do anything for you. That’s the hallmark of a great mare!  She has always put forth good effort in her races, but that has more often translated into second place finishes than wins. Her trainer says that she has a great mind and big heart, has always been sound and is a strong on-the-muscle galloper,  so an experienced rider is best for this athletic mare with high level potential.   If you are looking for an OTTB with upper level potential, we suggest you give this beauty serious consideration.   She also has excellent broodmare potential, either for racing or for sport horse breeding.  Her sire is Yes Its True, from the Raja Baba branch of the Bold Ruler line, and he is a top broodmare sire in racing.  Her female family is one of the best in the US stud book — the direct female line of the immortal Ruffian, as well as Icecapade, Private Terms, Coronado’s Quest, and numerous other top stakes winners. Icecapade and Private Terms are also popular in sport horse pedigrees. Her dam, Laugh Out Loud, by Unbridled, is a granddaughter of Shenanigans, the dam of Ruffian and Icecapades.

RIP BY YOU, 2017 15.2 h dark bay filly –retained for racing

RIP BY YOU, 2017 15.2 h dark bay filly
Located at Finger Lakes Race Track, Farmington, NY (near Rochester)
Resplendent with dapples, this pretty and flashy young filly is lightly raced, but after ten trips to the post with only one third to show for it, it is evident that racehorse is not the career for her. Since her sire, Courageous Cat, is known for siring horses who are fabulous jumpers, we think she might shine in the sport horse world. But with her smaller stature, polo could also be a good new career for her. She was very polite about posing quietly for our photographer. While chatting with her handler he reported that she has is good to gallop, but he also reported that she does crib at times. We can certainly vouch for her sweet personality and shiny good looks. She showed cute light and flat kneed movement for her jog video.  She has an excellent pedigree for sport disciplines. In addition to being sired by Courageous Cat, her dam is by Hook and Ladder, a Dixieland Band son who produced several horses who went on to eventing careers. Rip By You is fully eligible for the 2022 RRP, since she has raced this year — as recently as August 11.

SOXY RUBY, 2012 16.3h chestnut mare

SOXY RUBY, 2012 16.3h chestnut mare
Located at Finger Lakes Race Track, Farmington, NY (near Rochester)
When Ruby’s trainer contacted us about listing her, he said “she’s big and gorgeous” — and wow was he ever right! She has good bone and a muscular build that is framed by her shiny new copper penny coat, and her chrome adds to her flashy appearance. By the time we got to her barn, Ruby’s legs had already been done up after her morning gallop and the handler was kind enough to remove her bandages so we could see her pretty socks and get a look at her legs. The yellow hue is from the Furazone put on her legs prior to bandaging, a routine procedure in many shedrows. Ruby is described as an all around good citizen with no vices, excellent stall manners (although she is sensitive about being brushed) and we saw a lovely mare who oozes class and elegance. Her trainer reports that she is sound and hasn’t had any issues in the many years they have had her. She has a powerful engine for good push and propulsion and a strong shoulder for reach. She displayed lovely movement at the jog with nice suspension and loft. With her size and beauty, this mare will be noticed wherever she goes and, after her very successful racing career, she has plenty of miles left for success in her new career. Ruby has 69 lifetime starts with 7 wins, 18 seconds and 11 thirds, and she has earned over $175,000 –testament to her heart and durability. Don’t let her age put you off: the recent Olympic equestrian events in Tokyo showcased upper level competitors much older than her.

She is by Noonmark, who is by Unbridled’s Song, out of a Precise End mare. This big gorgeous great moving mare has unlimited potential for a sporting career!

BIG’S GRAY DAY, 2017 16.1h gray gelding

BIG’S GRAY DAY, 2017 16.1h gray gelding

This beautiful young gelding is described by his trainer as very friendly, and “such a good guy!”  He is sound with clean legs, but since he got a taste of farm life while on winter break, he has decided that he would rather do something else than be a race horse.  With his lofty, light, toe flicking movement, with fluid reach from his shoulders, we can see that something else being a show hunter, a dressage horse, or an eventer. His trainer says he has a laid back personality, is quiet and good to handle, and turns out well with other horses.  He is by Race Day, a son of Tapit.

BANKERS MOONSHINE, 2018 16h dark bay gelding

BANKERS MOONSHINE, 2018 16h dark bay gelding
Located at a farm next to the Finger Lakes Race Track, Farmington, NY (near Rochester)
This beautiful and mellow young gelding needs some rehab time, but in the right hands we think he is going to be a stunning horse who can excel in many new careers. He was recently diagnosed with a chip in his left front sesamoid; it has been x-rayed and evaluated by a vet and the x-rays can be shared with seriously interested people. The trainer and groom both informed us the vet has given him an excellent prognosis — she even thought that he could return to racing next year. But his owner/trainer does not want to do that, feeling that Bankers Moonshine will be better off in a non-racing career. Based on the vet’s prognosis, the trainer told us that with several months off and then careful patient restarting, he should be able to do any new discipline. Although Bankers Moonshine did not race, he does have published workouts, as recently as mid-July, so he is fully eligible for the 2022 RRP. Bankers Moonshine has been handling his stall rest very well, and he was perfectly behaved outside for his photos. He is beautifully put together, has a gorgeous head and kind eye and a shiny dappled coat. His trainer reports that he is a very friendly horse who loves treats — and his groom attested that he loves to eat, so this easy keeper should be able to maintain his glossy condition. He has an outstanding pedigree for sport: his sire Bank Heist is a son of Maria’s Mon, and his dam is by Malibu Moon. Please note, we only have a walk video, due to recent injury — but note how well behaved he is in the video for a young fit horse who had been just on stall rest for a couple of weeks. An excellent home that can do right by Bankers Moonshine is essential.

R BOY LITTLE EDDIE, 2018 17.1h chestnut gelding
Located at Finger Lakes Race Track, Farmington, NY (near Rochester)
For the right person with the patience and knowledge to give this HUGE flashy young guy rehab time, you will be richly rewarded with a lovely horse.  After a workout in late June, Eddie’s trainer didn’t think he came back quite right even though there were no signs of heat or swelling anywhere, so he had him x-rayed, and it turned out he had a small slab fracture in his right knee.  Eddie’s trainer reports that the vet said that after 4 to 6 months of  rehab, progressing from stall rest, to handwalking, to round pen turnout, and then slowly restarting, the horse should be fine with no limitations.  The x-rays can be made available to seriously interested people.  Note that we have a walk video only, since it was not advisable to jog him on pavement at this early stage in his rehab.  His walk was big and flowing. Eddie raced once last year, and had been working steadily for a planned return to the races this summer — so he is fully eligible for the 2022 RRP.  Eddie is reported to be good to work with, friendly, and good to ride. Although he had been on a couple weeks of stall rest when we saw him, he was very well behaved.  He is a well bred guy, sired by Violence, who is a son of Medaglia D’Oro, and his dam is by Big Brown, and she is a half sister to stakes winners and out of a stakes mare.  A good, knowledgeable home is essential, and references will be required and checked.

MOMENT OF TRIUMPH, 2014 16+h bay mare
Located at Finger Lakes Race Track, Farmington, NY (near Rochester)
This beautiful, elegant mare is described by her connections as a sweetheart who loves treats and attention and who is always well behaved and a pleasure to be around.  She never acts “marish,” and has won the hearts of people in her barn who usually are not partial to mares.  Moment of Triumph has been an honest hard trying race horse, racking up over $100,000 in earnings over her 52 race career, but this season she is letting her people know that she just would rather not race anymore. She is ready to move on to a new career sound and happy, with clean legs. She has lovely balanced conformation with good bone, a strong hind end and a big sloping shoulder — she looks like an athlete!  For her jog video she showed off very good movement with reach from her shoulders and good push from behind.  She has an outstanding pedigree for sporting/jumping disciplines. Her sire is Include, who is by Broad Brush out of a Stop the Music mare (from the Hail to Reason/Turn-to sire line).  Her dam is by More than Ready, from the Halo sire line, and is out of a mare with Damascus and Seattle Slew close up in her female family.  We can certainly see this mare bringing you many “moments of triumph” in eventing, hunters or jumpers!

Located at Finger Lakes Race Track, Farmington NY (near Rochester)
This gorgeous young gelding checks all the boxes for what everyone says they are looking for!  Lightly raced,  balanced and solid bodied conformation, sound, clean legged, a lovely mover, with a sweet and playful personality.  After just four races, it is obvious to his track connections that race horse is not the right career for him, but he has unlimited potential for any new discipline.  Around the barn they affectionately refer to him as “chunky punk butt,” and the trainer tells us that he is very sweet, loves to play and interact with people, and he happily amuses himself with a jolly ball in his stall. He has beautiful conformation, uphill with a strong sloping shoulder, well balanced, with a good topline and a kind eye. For his jog video he displayed very good movement, with lightness and suspension and an even cadence. His sire is Palace, who is a son of City Zip.  His dam Holly’s Star is by Dublin, who is by Afleet Alex.  These sire lines are known for athletic horses with good brains and temperaments; we have placed several who are excelling in eventing and as show hunters.

PALACEOFRESENTMENT, 2017 16.1h bay filly

PALACEOFRESENTMENT, 2017 16.1h bay filly
Located at Finger Lakes Race Track, Farmington, NY (near Rochester)
This solid bodied pretty bay girl is described by her track connections as a good filly to handle and work with, sensible and sound with clean legs — but after 9 starts with no wins, she is not showing enough on the track to warrant going on in that career.  In her most recent race at the end of June, she bled slightly (known as exercise induced pulmonary hemorrhage, EIPH), so sher caring owner decided it would be best for her to find a career less strenuous than racing (which means almost any new career).  Once horses are off the confined environment, and in situations where they get turn out and don’t have to run at full racing speed,  EIPH becomes a non-issue, and it presents no limitations on any new career.  She is solidly built, with a strong hind end and shoulder– and her four cute socks add to her visual appeal. She showed very good movement for her jog video, balanced and light with a good push from behind.  She is fully eligible for the 2021 and 2022 RRP. She has an excellent pedigree for sport. Her sire is Palace, who is a son of City Zip. Her dam, Resentment,  is by Tiz Wonderful, a son of Tiznow.

Giant Miracle, 2018 16h dark bay filly

GIANT MIRACLE, 2018 16h dark bay filly
Located at Finger Lakes Race Track, Farmington, NY (near Rochester)
If you are looking for a young, lightly raced, sound filly whose pedigree just screams sport horse potential and sport horse breeding, this nearly black daughter of Frost Giant out of a Cryptoclearance mare is for you! After just three races in which she languished near the rear of the field,  it is obvious that racing is not the career at which Giant Miracle can excel.  But with her pedigree and lofty movement, we can see Giant Miracle excelling in eventing, dressage, and as a sport horse broodmare.  Her track connections report that she is sound, good to work with and has no vices or issues – she just needs a new career!  Her most recent race was at the end of June, and she is fully eligible for the 2021 and 2022 RRP.  For her jog video she showed lofty movement with spring from behind.  When she finishes growing and fills out and develops across her top line, she will be a looker — she already has an amazing sloping shoulder! Her sire, Frost Giant, who is by Giant’s Causeway out of a Gone West mare, is deservedly coveted as a sire of eventers, dressage horses, and jumpers.  Giant Miracle’s dam Zaphyra also brings in coveted sport horse lines– she is a stakes placed daughter of Victory Gallop, who is a son of Cryptoclearance, and she is out of a graded stakes mare from Blushing Groom and Mill Reef/Never Bend lines. Cryptoclearance is the branch of the Fappiano sire line that has most excelled in sporting/jumping disciplines.

A son of Frost Giant — a sire much coveted by eventers!  And we think this big, elegant, dappled  guy has  unlimited sport horse potential.  He is ready to move on to a new career sound, and with clean legs.  He has had a decent racing career, with 2 wins and several top 3 finishes in 32 starts, but after 8 unsuccessful races this year his track connections realize that he is telling them his heart is no longer in racing. His handler described him as a kind and friendly horse with no vices, who is good to work. She says he is a strong galloper, but with “no funny business.”  He displayed very good, balanced and smooth movement with a big flowing stride.  Treu Blue Giant is fully eligible for the 2021 and 2022 RRP, and if you are looking for a big young gelding with upper level potential, you should be very seriously interested in this handsome horse!

GERAGHTY’S GIRL, 2018 15.3h+ bay filly
Located at Finger Lakes Race Track, Farmington, NY (near Rochester)
She may in a plain brown wrapper, but this young filly is a beautiful mover with outstanding potential for a sport horse career. Lightly raced, after 3 starts it is obvious, as her owner told us “that she’s just not going to be much of a race horse.” Her owner reports that Geraghty’s Girl is very sweet and good to work around with no vices, and sound with clean legs.  But she is particular about her treats — peppermints are preferred, and the carrots much be fresh! She said that the filly can act a bit silly to gallop on occasion, although she doesn’t buck or bolt — just immaturity.  Because of her youth, an experienced rider is recommended. Geraghty’s Girl showed off a flowing big stride at the walk, and a beautiful trot with balance, lightness, and good engagement from behind. Her sire is Alpha, is by Bernardini out of a Nijinsky mare. Her dam is by Officer, who is from the Relaunch/In Reality sire line. Geraghty’s Girl is fully eligib le for the 2021 and 2022 RRP.

AMERS, 2015 15.3h grey mare

AMERS, 2016 15.3h grey mare
Located at Finger Lakes Race Track, Farmington, NY (near Rochester)
Amers is a barn favorite, described as a super sweetheart who has captured all their hearts.  “It is time to let her move on, but there are going to be some tears in the barn when she leaves the track,” her trainer told us — as she and Amers snuggled with each other.  She also raved about how much Amers loves her young kids, and they love her too.  If you are the type of horse owner who likes to cuddle and love on your horse and be loved on back, then Amers is just who you are looking for!  And the fact that she is a gorgeous dappled grey with a kind eye just adds to her appeal. Amers has had a good racing career, with 8 wins,5 seconds, and 3 thirds in 29 starts — with two of her wins coming this year.  But she is letting her track connections know that she just doesn’t like the track life anymore, as she has started “freezing up” when taken over to the track.  Her trainer reports that Amers just adores being on the farm and getting turn out, and would be so much happier in a new career where she can get turn out and lots of attention.  Amers showed off a flowing walk and cute flat kneed movement for her jog video.  She has old osselets that the trainer says have not bothered her, and they should not impair her potential for any new career. Amers is aby Graydar, who is by Unbridled’s Song.  Her stakes winning dam is by Exchange Rate, who is by Danzig.  These are deservedly popular sport horse lines.

UNWAVERING, 2017 16.3h bay gelding

UNWAVERING,  2017 16.3h bay gelding
Located at Finger Lakes Race Track, Farmington, NY (near Rochester)
Wow — this impressive big young son of super sire Into Mischief cost $300,000 as a two year old! But he has not lived up to his regal pedigree in his racing performance, so now you can acquire him for a fraction of that price and bring out his exceptional sport horse potential. Unwavering has had 11 starts, with one win and one third to show for his efforts.  His trainer reports that Unwavering is sound; indeed, he has been scoped and checked out to try to ascertain if there is any physical reason why he has not raced up to his pedigree, and everything has checked out OK.  The trainer also reports that this big boned still going young horse benefits greatly from periodic chiropractic work (he finally won after they did chiro adjustments for him), and that his exercise rider reports that he feels great under saddle after he is adjusted. So we strongly recommend a home that will continue this beneficial periodic body work for him. The trainer also said he thinks Unwavering wants to just gallop all day on the grass…. well that sounds like a cross-country eventing machine to us! He informed us that Unwavering is sound, good to handle,  and is a friendly horse.  He can be a strong galloper on the track, and with his size and youth he is best suited for an experienced reider who can bring out his sport horse potential.   We admired his big bone and impressive shoulder… and just imagine what a stunning specimen he will be when he finishes growing and is fully mature. The trainer reports that Unwavering is good to handle, and is particularly settled down on the farm and enjoys turnout.  We saw his unflappable demeaner when someone on a bicycle suddenly rode up right behind him and he barely flicked an ear.  For his jog video Unwavering shoed good hind end engagement and reach from his shoulders.

While his pedigree was meant for racetrack stardom, it is also great for sport/jumping disciplines. Into Mischief is a son of Harlan’s Holiday, and that sire and his other sire sons are proving quite popular amongst eventers for producing forward thinking bold jumpers with great stamina. Unwavering’s dam is a half sister to several top stakes winners including top sire Petionville, another sire admired in sport horse disciplines. His dam is from Deputy Minister and Wavering Monarch/Majestic Light lines… terrific sport horse lines!

DREAMS STILL WILD, 2018 15.3h dk. b. filly

Located at Finger Lakes Race Track, Farmington NY (near Rochester)
Nearly black, the flashy chrome really stands out on this fancy filly.  We thought she was gorgeous as she stood for her photos, but then when we saw her move, our assessment went to fabulous as well! Your dreams really can run wild with this one! She is lightly raced, with 1 win in 8 starts. Her trainer says that while she is very sound,  she is just not happy with the racing life –the trainer says that she gets very stressed on her way from the saddling paddock through the tunnel onto the track before a race, sapping all her energy so that she shows early speed from the gate and then fades in the stretch.   But she’s fine when galloping in the mornings,  Her handler said that she could benefit from some turn out and let down time to grow up, enjoy being a horse, and get the stress of racing out of her system. Since she is only three, and still growing, this time in transitioning her to a new career would be beneficial even if she were a cool customer about racing. She last raced on June 16, so she is fully eligible for the 2021 and 2022 RRP — we would love to see her shine in the 202 RRP!  She has a big flowing walk with a nice overstep, and a big trot with great push from behind and reach from the shoulders. She jogged on a loose lead, going at whatever pace her handler set.  Her movement is fancy enough to shine in the hunter ring or dressage arena. She is sired by Teuflesberg, who is from the Johannesberg/Henessey sire line and out of a Devil’s Bag mare. Her dam is by Devil HIs Due, which brings in another cross of Devil’s Bag/Halo.  We placed another mare by Tueflesberg last fall who has turned out to be a fabulous jumper with great scope and form, and we see the same athletic sport horse potential in this filly.  The trainer reports that she is a mild cribber and it is completely controlled with a collar.

LOFTY REASON, 2017 15.3h bay filly

LOFTY REASON, 2017 15.3h bay filly
Located at Finger Lakes Race Track, Farmington, NY (near Rochester)
We can think of many reasons to bring this lovely filly into your life — her flashy good looks and pretty flat kneed huntery movement amongst them. Lightly raced, she has one win in 10 starts, and is ready to move on to a new career sound and clean legged.  She has been jostled around at the start in some recent races, which has made her apprehensive and hesitant about the starting gate, and her owner/trainer has decided it would be best for her to find a new career.  He also reports that Lofty Reason is much happier on the farm where she can get turnout than she is at the track — all the more reason to let her find a new career.  She lasst raced on June 16, so she is fully eligible for the 2021 and 2022 RRP. Her exercise rider, who comes from an eventing and jumping background, is very enthusiastic about this filly’s potential for these disciplines, and with her looks and movement we can also envision her standing out in the show hunter ring. The trainer told us that her dam, No Rhyme or Reason, is now excelling in a jumping program after having three foals (the last of which was Lofty Reason). The trainer reports that this filly is very sound, and has no vices, but can be balky about trailer loading.  She has an excellent pedigree for sporting disciplines. Her sire is Soaring Empire, a son of Empire Maker (whi is by Unbridled) who is out of an AP Indy mare.  Her dam is by Full Mandate, an AP Indy son out of a Deputy Minister mare, and her dam is out of a mare from the Montbrook/Buckpasser line. Lofty Reason was alert, friendly, and perfectly behaved for her photo session, and showed a flowing walk and a light, flowing flat kneed trot. To see this one in person is to fall in love!

PITTERPATTER, 2018 17h+ gr/roan gelding

Pitterpatter, 2018 17+ h gr/roan gelding
Located at Finger Lakes Race Track, Farmington, NY
Pitterpatter, affectionately known around his barn as “Skip,” is a dreamboat unraced young gelding who, according to his trainer, ticks all the boxes except for one: racehorse. He has not shown any prowess for racing and, although young and fairly early into his training, and a very willing attitude, the decision has been made to move him along to a new career. He is described as sweet, playful, wonderful to gallop and handle and an all around good citizen, thanks to a good start with his breeder/owner who has always done right by him. Pitterpatter loves attention, is a good eater, a great mover and is conformationally correct with good bone and big strong feet. He has had throat surgery and intermittently makes noise when startled or exerting himself. His trainer reports that a tongue tie helps when he is in work. Pitterpatter demonstrates a fluid, “swingy” walk and a  huge strided lofty trot with great reach from his shoulders — movement that had us seeing upper level dressage potential. He is by Mission Impazible, a son of Unbridled’s Song; we have placed several offspring by this sire who have turned out to have great brains and to take to eventing and jumping quite well. MED SCHOOL MICHAEL, 2017 15.3h chestnut gelding

MED SCHOOL MICHAEL, 2017 15.3h chestnut gelding
Located at Finger Lakes Race Track, Farmington, NY
Our volunteers were smitten with the solid bodied good looks of this beautiful young gelding, even before his trainer started raving about what a sweetheart he is.  The trainer, who also gallops her horses, says he is wonderful to ride, to handle, to groom, to work with in his stall and to be around. Indeed, she told us that if she were going to have any horse as her personal riding horse “as a pet,” Michael is the one she would pick. After 5 starts without a win, it is evident that racing is not his game.  The trainer reports that he came back “a bit ouchy” from his last race on June 14, and she had her vet give him a thorough check up. She reported that the vet said everything was Ok, no major issues detected.  We photographed and video’d  him the next day, just 4 days after the race, and he looked fine and happy to us, and did not show any post-race stiffness. He showed good movement, with good engagement from behind, and for a moment while the trainer jogged him he even showed a bit of a lovely balance canter on the lead line.  Michael has a fantastic sport horse pedigree. His sire is Verrazano, a son of More than Ready from the Halo line, out of a Giant’s Causeway mare.  Michael’s dam is by Wild Again, a son of Icecapade, and she is out of a Lord at War mare.  The contact person for Michael is the owner, who is based at Belmont, since there is a possibility that he may take him to that track to try retraining him as a track pony for his trainer brother while still looking for a great non-racing home.  But if you are seriously interested in Michael (as we think you should be!!!) you can send FLF a Message and we can provide you with the direct contact info for his trainer at Finger Lakes so long as he is still at that track.

EARNED SUCCESS, 2015 16h bay gelding

EARNED SUCCESS, 2015 16h bay gelding
Located at Finger Lakes Race Track, Farmington, NY
Earned Success (we immediately nicknamed him Ernie!) is a handsome, very well -bred hunk who was a $350,000 yearling, and has achieved war horse status with 6 wins, and 14 top 3 finishes and almost $200,000 in earnings in his 22 races — well- earned success and a well -earned retirement indeed! We were captivated by his kind intelligent eye, regal demeanor, and solid bodied good looks and strong shoulder. His handler, the trainer’s daughter, described him as an athletic, quiet, very good boy — “some lucky person who will give him some R & R time is going to get a very good horse,” she exclaimed!  He has been showing some stiffness from the wear and tear of racing, so they have decided it is time for Earned Success to move on to enjoy retirement to a less strenuous career.  He has been checked over and we were told that other than some ankle rounding nothing is amiss with him but he could benefit from chiropractic adjustments and let down/ turn out time. He has raced 4 times this year, so he is fully eligible for the 2021 and 2022 RRP. We  photographed him not long after a strong half mile workout, and for his jog video (missing a shoe) the post- race and work stiffness that his handler described was evident, but so was his  kind and compliant temperament.  If you are looking for a kind, gorgeous, well-bred, big hearted horse for the lower levels of any discipline (realistically, the levels that most of us actually do) and you are willing to provide the chiropractic work and turn out that Ernie and most retiring racehorses so greatly benefit from, then this guy is a bargain who should reward you as much as he has rewarded his racing connections.  Earned Succes is by Mineshaft, who was one of AP Indy’s best sons. His dam, Valiant Passion, is a graded stakes placed stakes producing daughter of Lion Heart. Notable sport horse sire influences in his pedigree include Quiet American, Fappiano, Secretariat, Hoist the Flag, and Hail to Reason.

MY LITTLE PRETTY, 2018 15.2h chestnut filly

MY LITTLE PRETTY, 2018 15.2h chestnut filly
Located at Finger Lakes Race Track, Farmington, NY
Aptly named, this young filly is as sweet as she is adorable.  She came out of her last race a couple of weeks ago with a sore knee, so she needs to find a loving home that can give her the rehab time she needs, while showering her with affection which she will readily return. We watched her snuggle with her handler, who kept saying that she’s a sweetheart, quiet, always well behaved, and great to handle. Although she had been on stall rest for a couple of weeks when we photographed her, she came outside, stood quietly, and never turned a hair, despite morning activity going on around her. Her trainer has not done x-rays on her knee, but her handler thinks that with stall rest and an appropriate amount of rehab time, My Little Pretty could have a useful career as a riding horse. She raced 4 times, and had two good third place efforts in her most recent starts, so the heart and ability is there.   She is by Khozan, who is a son of Distorted Humor.  Her dam is by Parading, who is by Pulpit from the AP Indy line.
Price: $1,000 negotiable. Good home essential; references will be checked.

SNAPPY CAT, 2017 16.1h grey gelding

SNAPPY CAT, 2017 16.1h grey gelding
Located on a farm very close to the Finger Lakes Race Track where he can be seen by appointment.
This handsome guy checks all the boxes:  young gelding with good bone and size; sound and clean legged; very good mover; friendly with a great temperament; unlimited sport horse potential; great sport horse pedigree by a sire who has produced several outstanding jumpers — and he is GREY!!! While Snappy Cat may be an exciting sport horse prospect, a racehorse he is not– after 6 starts in which he has yet to hit the board, his owner/trainer realizes that his talents lie in a new career direction. He last raced on June 8, and he is fully eligible for the 2021 and 2022 RRP.  His trainer says that whoever buys Snappy Cat will be getting a “very good horse!”  He reports that Snappy is very sound, has never had any issues, is good to ride and goes in a plain D snaffle and has never pulled any antics on exercise riders.  He also says that Snappy is a kind and friendly horse who loves attention.  The trainer reports that Snappy has shown occasional early speed in a couple of his races, but does not sustain it. To try to ascertain why he doesn’t run well, he recently had him scoped,  and he scoped completely clean with no airway or flap issues at all.  Snappy Cat is by Courageous Cat, who is from Storm Cat, Rahy and Blushing Groom lines.  His dam, Classy Maria, is by Maria’s Mon, who is a coveted sport horse sire known for horses with good brains, and great movement.  We have placed a few Courageous Cat offspring in recent years, and they have turned out to outstanding jumpers with excellent form. For his jog video, Snappy showed light movement with suspension and good hind end engagement.  Snappy Cat is everything that everyone says they want, so we advise acting quickly to snap him up.

RESILIENT KINDAGUY, 2018 16.2h bay gelding

RESILIENT KINDAGUY,  2018 16.2h bay gelding
Located on a farm in Shortsville NY close to the Finger Lakes Race Track
This big young gelding wowed our volunteers with his sport horse potential — and he is offered at a bargain price for what everyone says they want: young, big, lightly raced, sound, good moving gelding. He has raced three times — all this year — without success, so his trainer realizes his potential lies in a discipline other than racing. He is described by his trainer as sound, good to handle, with no vices.  The farm owner, where he has been for over a week, reports that he has been easy to groom and handle, polite going to and from turn out, and that he has been happy in turn out either alone or with another gelding.  He posed and jogged politely and was very friendly, not bothered in the slightest by the goats romping in a nearby pen, or by the farm owner’s visiting grandchildren playing nearby. He has an uphill build with good bone and a strong shoulder — just what sporting disciplines look for.  He has a couple of scabs on his hind ankles from hitting himself in a recent race — but hind boots and farrier work can take care of this.  He tracked straight for his jog video, and showed very good movement with suspension and hind end engagement,  even on the uneven gravelly ground.  He has an excellent sport horse pedigree. His sire is Stormy Atlantic, a turf oriented sire who is known for good brained athletic sport horses. His dam, Married at Sea, is by Chapel Royal, who is from the Montbrook/Buckpasser sire line. When this young guy finishes growing and fills out he is going to be quite impressive.

Boston Girl, 2017 15.3h bay filly

BOSTON GIRL, 2017 15.3h bay filly
Located at Finger Lakes Race Track, Farmington, NY
Known around her barn as “Emma,” Boston Girl may be too slow to go on with her racing career, but with her build, lovely movement, and great sport horse pedigree she has exciting unlimited potential for a new career.  After 7 races in which she has yet to hit the board, her owner and trainer realize that Emma’s talents lie in a discipline other than racing. They report that Emma prefers the turf, which bodes well for eventing! She last raced on May 19, 2021,  so she is fully eligible for the 2021 and 2022 RRP. Her trainer, who has had her since she was a yearling, reports that Emma is very sound (her legs are clean but for a small scar on her right front shin from when she was a baby, but this is purely cosmetic), good to ride (her trainer also gallops her) and a very nice mover who does what the rider asks and goes along in a nice frame. She says that Emma can be mouthy and a bit pushy in a playful way, so she would be best suited for someone experienced in dealing with young horses off the track.  We admired Boston Girl’s balanced athletic build, and her light balanced trot with good suspension.  Eventing, dressage, jumping — all should be right up her alley!  She is sired by Wicked Strong, a young sire from the Hard Spun/Danzig line who is already gaining a following as a sire in eventing/sport horse disciplines.  Her dam, Just Say Hey, is by Rockport Harbor, a son of Unbridled’s Song — another sire line much coveted in the sport horse world.

Touch of Nirvana, 2017 15.2-3 h chestnut filly

TOUCH OF NIRVANA, 2017 15.2-3h chestnut filly
Located at Finger Lakes Race Track, Farmington, NY
A total sweetheart, Touch of Nirvana is the opposite of the chestnut mare stereotype.  Her handler says she is very good to be around, to groom, to handle, to ride — a filly that aims to please and has no bad habits or vices, who loves to tuck into her hay, and to get carrots and attention.  She has a beautifully balanced build, and the sweetest face.  After her last workout at the end of April, Touch of Nirvana came back with a bit of heat in her right front, so her trainer had her fully evaluated and x-rayed.  The x-rays of front knees and ankles were all clean, and the heat and soreness soon went away.  But since she wasn’t showing enough aptitude for racing, with only 1 win in 12 races, the owner decided she deserved to find a new career. On the day we saw her, her legs were clean and cold, and she showed off a very cute light toe pointing trot. Her handler said she had just been hand walking the shed row for a few weeks, and she was worried that she might be frisky when brought out to jog for us — but Touch of Nirvana was perfectly behaved, soaking up the attention while standing quietly, and jogging politely. She has the smaller stature, balanced build, and light on her feet qualities coveted for polo, but we also think she could do any new discipline. She certainly has the pedigree to be a sport horse. Her sire, Tapiture, is a son of Tapit out of a mare with Private Account and Nasrullah in her pedigree.  Touch of Nirvana’s dam, Holy Touch, is by Touch Gold, a Deputy Minister son, out of a mare by Holy Bull.

Wicked Concorde, 2018 16+h bay gelding

Wicked Concorde, 2018 16+h bay gelding
Located at Finger Lakes Race Track, Farmington, NY
There’s nothing wicked at all about this growing young gelding, who is described by his trainer as a perfect gentleman, good to handle and groom.  After only three races it is obvious he is just too slow to make his mark on the racetrack, but he has unlimited potential for a sport horse career.  With his uphill build, strong shoulder, and light springy movement he should take to eventing or dressage or jumping disciplines.  When he finishes growing and fills out, he should be stunning. His trainer says he is sound, and is usually quiet and well behaved and good to ride.  On the day we photographed him he had done nothing but walk the shedrow for a week since his last race and the decision to retire him from racing, so he was a bit fresh for his jog video, but very respectful of his trainer, and he showed tantalizing hints of a light and lofty trot.  He is by Wicked Tune out of Discreet Concorde by Discreet Cat. The Discreet Cat offspring we are familiar with are outstanding jumpers. His trainer needs his stall for more productive racehorses, so he is offered at a very attractive price for a young gelding with so much sporting potential.

Too Many Tales, 2016 16.1h bay mare

Too Many Tales, 2016 16.1h+ bay mare
Located on a farm in Clifton Springs, NY near the Finger Lakes Race Track
This pretty sweetheart mare with flashy chrome is an excellent sport horse prospect.  She last raced at the end of October 2020, is fully let down on a farm,  ready to start her new career, and eligible for the 2021 and 2022 RRP Makeover. Lightly raced, with one win and 6 in the money finishes in 12 starts, she is ready to move on to a new career because her owner has decided to go in a different direction with his initiatives. Her trainer — a first class horsewoman for whom we have proudly listed many top quality horses over the years — says that Too Many Tales has always been sound with no issues, and that she has a great temperament and is a sweetheart that loves people and attention.  We got to see these qualities for ourselves, as we watched her stand politely to be groomed in her stall, and soak up our attention, pats, and peppermints as she stood for her photo session.  The trainer says that exercise riders raved about how smooth and straightforward Too Many Tales is to ride, always well behaved and responsive.  We think she could be ammy friendly if you are working with a trainer who can help you restart a horse off the track.  She has a very strong sloping shoulder and strong hind end, with good bone and very clean legs.  She does have very prominent high withers so you will have to insure good saddle and blanket fit. Both the trainer and the farm owner said that she loves turnout, and gets along in a mixed group and doesn’t care whether she is turned out with mares or geldings.  Too Many Tales had lost a front shoe and bruised her foot a few days before we saw her, and even though the farrier had just put the shoe back on, she was still a bit foot sore. She is by Forty Tales, who is by Tale of the Cat out of a Forty Niner mare. Her dam is by Alydeed, who is from Nijinsky and Alydar lines.

Audubon Wood, 2016 16h chestnut gelding

AUDUBON WOOD, 2016 16h chestnut gelding

Located at a farm in Mendon, NY

Woody is described by the H/J trainer who is restarting him as charming, super sweet, sound, and with an easy going great temperament.  He also describes Woody as an easy keeper who gets along well with others in turnout, and as an eager pupil who is quickly adapting to learning new things.  Woody last raced in December 2020, so he is fully eligible for the 2021 RRP.  He had 23 starts, but after breaking his maiden he didn’t find the winner’s circle again, so his owner realized his heart was no longer in the racing game, and that he would be better suited for a new sport horse career. His owner says he retired completely sound from the track, and never had any issues.  He has the quiet temperament, flashy good looks, and movement to stand out in the hunter ring, but with his fabulous sport horse pedigree he is also an exciting prospect for eventing or any new discipline.  His sire is Munnings, who is from the Speightstown/Gone West sire line and out of a Holy Bull mare.  His dam is by Honour and Glory, who is by Relaunch, and she is out of a Danzig line mare.  Woody has been lightly restarted with ground work and a few under saddle rides. From the outset, he stood politely at the mounting block, and has been ridden by a teenager. He is reported to have a light, smooth way of going, and to be a good learner.  Act fast to bring this flashy charmer into your life, since the price is likely to go up as he gets more retraining.

PRINCESS AZTECA, 2016 15.3h bay filly

Located at a farm near Avon NY, where she can be seen by appointment
This dappled filly is described as very brave, athletic, and handy… those attributes, plus her smaller size, should make her a perfect polo prospect! She also has an ideal sport horse pedigree, with Sadler’s Wells on both her sire and dam side. So if you are a person who does not need a big horse, and you are looking for a young, sound, brave, handy athlete with a perfect eventing pedigree, then Princess Azteca is for you. Princess raced 13 times with only a couple of placings to show for her efforts — perhaps her turf oriented pedigree made her ill suited for the hard dirt surface at Finger Lakes, but her turf oriented breeding is ideal for sport disciplines. She raced four times in 2020, so she is fully eligible for the 2021 RRP. She is described as sound, and her legs are clean. She shows very cute movement at the trot, and a nice flowing bid strided walk in her videos. We were told that she can be a bit crabby towards people and other horses — not mean, but not a cuddlebug either. Her sire is Paddy O’Prado, a son of El Prado, who is by Sadler’s Wells. Paddy O’Prado’s dam is from the Kris. S./Roberto sire line — another great sport horse line. Princess Azteca’s dam is an Irish bred mare who is from the Gone West and Caro sire lines, out of a mare from the Sadler’s Wells line. Princess Azteca is offered at an enticing bargain price, because her owner would like her to find a good new home and new career quickly.

ONCE IS FOREVER, 2015 16.1h+ dark bay mare

Located at Finger Lakes Race Track, Farmington, NY

A very, very special mare says her contact person, who rides her, grooms her, ponies her, puts her young daughter on her to ride, and handles so many horses at the track and rarely raves about one as much as she raves about Once is Forever!  She says that Once is Forever is very sound, has absolutely no vices, is a very friendly sweetheart who loves kids and pets (as is evident in the photos!), has no vices, trailers  very well, and has been ridden on trails, gone over cross rails, and has been ridden in both English and Western saddles by her and her young daughter.  The mare does all this while also in race training and racing– she has a “whatever you want me to do” attitude!  So just imagine what she will do once she is concentrated on one particular new discipline. This unflappable versatility and attitude to do whatever her rider wants suggests to us that this gorgeous young sound big mare can succeed in any discipline you want to point her to. And she seems to have upper level potential for sporting disciplines. We were told that she has been measured at just a hair under 16.2h, which is certainly big enough for almost anyone.   Once is Forever has 29 starts, with 3 wins and 9 additional top 3 finishes and over $40,000 in earnings. She has raced 6 times this year with a win and a placing, and is fully eligible for the 2021 RRP –  and we think she can be a star in multiple disciplines, Western and English. In the video clip sent to us of the mare being ridden, she displays a beautiful light and balanced trot with great flat kneed reach from her shoulders. And she shows great balance and responsiveness to her rider’s weight shifting and leg cues as she does turns on the forehand on a soft rein!  We also watched the videos of some of her winning races to further assess her movement, and we observed a very fluid ground covering gallop.  Once is Forever is by Stay Thirsty, who is a son of Bernardini and a grandson of AP Indy and is out of a Storm Bird mare.  One is Forever’s dam Thunder Babe is from Nijinsky, In Reality, and Hail to Reason lines — all excellent sport horse sire lines.

PRESTON COURT, 2016 16.1h gray gelding

Located at Finger Lakes Race Track, Farmington, NY

When a gorgeous gray comes out of the barn and his handler describes him as “a very cool horse,” “a super nice guy,” you should all pay attention!  Preston Court is a very well bred, young and still growing gelding who has good bone, a good strong shoulder, and good hip angles.  He is still a bit butt high, which suggests he has more growing to do. We think when he finishes growing and fills out and develops his top line he is going to be stunning.  He is described as sound, and we observed clean legs. He has 13 starts, 2 wins and 4 additional top 3 finishes, so he has earned his keep as a race horse. But he is with a trainer who believes in letting them move on to new careers once they have gone through their first couple of level of race conditions and are not likely to set the racing world on fire, but have unlimited potential for new sport horse careers.  Preston Court wowed us with his huge overstep at the walk and his very fluid trot — jogging very politely on a loose lead in the midst of a cold wind that had others riled up. He was very friendly and quiet and seemed ot enjoy our attention.  Preston Court is sired by Mission Impazzible, a son of Unbridled’s Song out of a Hold Your Peace (Prince John lines) mare. Mission Impazzible has quickly established himself as a sire of good sport horses who have great brains, even temperaments, willing attitudes, and excellent jumping ability. Preston Court’s dam was a $300,000 yearling, and she is by Elusive Quality out of a graded stakes winning Danzig granddaughter.

WIN BIGLY, 2016 16.2h bay gelding

Located at Finger Lakes Race Track, Farmington, NY

On a day when our volunteers saw a dozen seriously nice horses, this big young guy was the one that had us drooling the most under our masks!  His photos on a gray blustery day just do not do him justice — he is spectacular in person, and  we think you will indeed “Win Bigly” with him in the sporting discipline of your choice. Show hunter? Jumper? Eventing? Dressage?  We think Win Bigly has great aptitude for all of them. His handler kept raving about what a classy horse he is, with lots of lovable personality.  His trainer says he is sound — he had already been done up in front wraps as standard practice by the time we got to his barn to photograph him, and we were assured that his legs are completely clean.  “Big,” as his handler affectionately called him, impressed us with his kind eye and alert expression, his great sloping shoulder that shouts jumping ability, and his solid boned uphill build.  For his jog video Big displayed light big strided movement with loft and reach.  Win Bigly is lightly raced, with only 11 starts, and 3 wins. But this year in his 4 starts he has been less successful in the tougher race conditions his previous victories limit him to, so his trainer wants to let him go on to a new career. He is by Courageous Cat, a Storm Cat son out of a mare from Rahy, Blushing Groom and Danzig lines who is proving to sire horses who show beautiful jumping form based on our experience.  Big’s dam is by Devil’s Bag, a son of Halo, who is also an admired sport horse sire. Trust us… we think Big is one of the best we have listed out of a seriously fancy group in the FLF Class of 2020!

SEATTLE FROST, 2015 15.3+h dark bay mare

Located at Finger Lakes Race Track, Farmington, NY

Attention fans of Frost Giant offspring! Here is a beautiful young sound daughter of this coveted sport horse sire offered at a bargain price.  Her trainer describes her as a very sound mare who loves to be petted and loved on. You can see from the photos how much she loves peppermint treats! We observed her being groomed untied in her stall, and while she showed some mild ticklishness with some brief ear pinning she was such a good girl who never so much as turned her head. Her trainer also gallops her and said that she can sometimes take a hold of the bit, but when she is in regular work and gets turn out “she is like a kitten and you could put an 8 year old child on her.” We admired Seattle Frost’s elegant pretty good looks and big shoulder and uphill build. She showed good big strided light movement for her jog video, and did exactly what her trainer asked — when her trainer ran fast for the first pass, Frost trotted really fast; when we asked the trainer to slow her own pace down, Frost then just ambled slowly alongside on a loose lead. This is a sign of a horse very attentive to cues and who likes to do what she is being asked to do! The trainer reports that Frost did have a mild partially paralyzed flap and she had surgery to correct it right in her stall, and that she has been scoped since by the vet and has received a clean bill of health and makes no noise when galloping.  Frost has had 26 starts, with only one win, so it is obvious that her talents lie in a different direction than racing. She is by Frost Giant, a son of Giant’s Causeway out of a Gone West mare who is proving to be a sire of excellent sport horses who have good brains, great heart, good jumping ability and movement.  Her dam is a granddaughter of Seattle Slew.  The trainer is very motivated to find a good new home for this lovely sport horse prospect by the time the stable area closes on Nov. 4, so please step up quickly if you wnat to get a Frost Giant offspring at a bargain price!

As we watched the lofty great movement of this gorgeous gelding, we couldn’t help but think about the beautiful music you could pair him with for your dressage freestyle!  Everyone tells us they want a young sound good sized gelding who is a good mover, has great sport horse potential, and is bargain priced. Well here he is!! Better act fast, because such a beautiful young gelding with such quality movement at this price should get snapped up quickly.  Tchai, as his trainer calls him, impressed us with his beautiful head, well proportioned physique, and lofty movement with suspension and reach.  His trainer reports that he is very sound, has no vices, and is a very mellow settled guy at her farm where her helper has even ridden him around bareback. She says that he loves turn out and grazing! He has 22 starts, with 3 wins and 3 places, but this year he has had less success, so she realizes it is best to let him find a new career. We photographed him just before he was tacked up to go out to gallop, and for his jog video he was a bit up since he knew that he was supposed to be going to the track. But oh my did his movement leave us drooling under out masks — he showed off great suspension and cadence and a great reach from the shoulders and push from behind.  Tchai is by Elusive Quality, a son of Gone West out of a dam from Northern Dancer and Sir Ivor bloodlines.  Tchai’s dam True Gritz is by Yes Its True, who is from the Raja Baba sire line.  Tchai is an exciting sport horse prospect!

THE YELLOW ONE, 2018 15.1h palomino filly

Located at a farm in Caledonia NY, where she can be seen by appointment.

Yes, she really is a registered TB!  This adorable petite but still growing two year old is sired by a TB palomino stallion from sport horse/show hunter lines, and her dam was a race horse who we listed 7 years ago. The person who brought Yellow out for her photos started her training and broke her to saddle. She says that Yellow is a sweetheart who was easy and straightforward to break, but that she is very much still a baby who needs to physically and mentally mature. She is surely likely to grow some more, but she is  not going to be a big horse.   Yellow is a very young two year old — she was not bred on a race horse timeline, and was foaled in mid-July 2018 so she is just barely two.  Her handler said that despite her immaturity Yellow has a good brain and takes in new experiences with a good attitude.  Indeed, Yellow had never previously set foot on a racetrack stable area until the night before we photographed her (her owners sent her to the track so that we could get photos of her), but she was completely unfazed by the unfamiliar environment and the morning activity at the track.  Yellow’s handler reported that Yellow has been ridden around her farm, but she has never galloped and has no race training.  She is well put together, barefoot, and a cute mover who showed an even balanced trot. Yellow is bred to be a sport horse, not a race horse. Her sire is RFF Palominoprince, who is from the famous Red Fox Farm  breeding program of paint and palomino TB and warmblood sport horses. Her grandsire was a champion show hunter and hunter hack. Her dam Top Lass was a hard knocking durable race mare who was a very good mover, and is a granddaughter of Private Account and Dixieland Band — great sport horse lines.  If you have the experience and patience to let this baby finish growing and mentally maturing, and can wait to start serious training for a sport horse discipline for a year or so, then you are the kind of person that can do right by Yellow.

STEFANIA, 2014 16h chestnut mare

Located at Finger Lakes Race Track, Farmington, NY

The beautiful solid bodied Stefania is described by her handler as a good girl who is very nice to ride, with a lovely way of going who never does anything wrong.  She reports that she has ridden Stefania at the farm over the winter, and that she is equally unflappable there and at the track.  Stefania also turns out well in a mixed herd.  We admired Stefania’s kind eye, friendly and quiet demeanor, and her strong shoulder and balanced conformation. Stefania is more suited for flat work and lower level jumping, because she has previously had chips removed from each knee.  Stefania has raced this year after those surgeries, has hit the board, and has not had any issues or unsoundness or soreness. The fact that she has held up well for racing bodes well for her hardiness for many new careers. She has had 15 starts and two wins.  She is a very nice mover, with a flowing flat kneed trot and good hind end engagement.  We think she would make a lovely dressage horse. She is also an enticing sport horse broodmare prospect, because her pedigree is ideal for sporting disciplines. She is by Encaustic, who is a son of Broad Brush out of a Stop the Music mare from the Hail to Reason/Turn-to sire line.  Stefania’s dam Never Under is from the Wavering Monarch/Majestic Light sire line and out of a mare from the In Reality/Intentionally sire line.

SANDY LANE, 2015 16h bay gelding

Located at Finger Lakes Race Track, Farmington, NY

Our volunteers fell totally in love with this kind eyed sweetheart — and that was even before we looked up his pedigree and found out that he is by the great sire Awesome Again and out of a mare by the much loved Say Florida Sandy — a sire who was well known for getting great brained, kind, durable and  big hearted horses who were coveted in the eventing and fox hunting communities. Sandy is described by his handler as a very sweet and kind horse who is a solid citizen who never does anything wrong — but he does not care for the Finger Lakes racing surface (they claimed him at Aqueduct, and he raced much better on the tougher NY circuit).  He has 29 starts with 3 wins, 9 additional top 3 finishes, and over $90,000 in earnings. She says he is sound, and we observed clean legs and good big feet.  He has very good solid and balanced conformation, and the most pleasant and kind expression. He jogged very quietly like an obedient puppy on a loose lead, showing nice balanced movement. His handler says that he has been out of training for several weeks, which makes it even more amazing how quiet he was for his jog. She says that he was turned out for the winter at the farm, and that he easily mixed in with the herd as low guy in on the totem pole.  He is by Awesome Again, from the Deputy Minister sire line out of a mare from the Blushing Groom line, and his dam is a stakes placed mare by Say Florida Sandy, who is by Personal Flag, a son of Private Account and a Hoist the Flag mare.  Sandy’s dam is also from Roberto and Buckpasser lines. In essence, Sandy Lane’s pedigree is a “who’s who” of sires known for getting durable, kind, steady, good jumping sport horses.  Sandy is fully eligible for the 2021 RRP and we would love to follow his new career!
