This handsome gelding has shown his connections that his passion for the racetrack is waning and they have decided to let him retire to his next career while he is able-bodied and healthy. What a stunning big black hunk of sculpted, muscular, TB perfection!  Our volunteers could hardly take our eyes off Mr. Honey Badger, proclaiming him one of the most gorgeous horses we have ever seen.  We admired his solid boned balanced body, strong sloping shoulder, muscular topline, elegant head and kind intelligent eye. And his heart and athleticism and work ethic match his beauty — he has won 12 races, with 8 seconds and 12 thirds out of 61 starts.  His owner told us that he is just a great horse with a great mind, who will do anything that you ask him to do and who always tries hard.  After his last race in late March, he was diagnosed with a small ankle chip.  It was x-rayed, and those x-rays will be available to seriously interested potential good homes.  The vet said that with a rest period, the chip should reabsorb and be no issue at all for future new careers in any discipline.  Mr. Honey Badger was given a month of stall rest, had his shoes pulled, and then has been walking and trotting on the eurociser, and has also been enjoying turn out.  It is recommended that he stay in light work for another month or so before starting more rigorous retraining. His caring owner, who so greatly appreciates all that this horse has done for  them, does not want to bring him back to racing, but instead wants to find him a great new home where Mr. Honey Badger can excel in a new career.  He was a perfect gentleman for his photo session, and despite being barefoot he jogged very nicely on the pavement, showing lightness and balance to his movement.  His pedigree is ideal for sport/jumping: he is a son of Purim, who is by the great Dynaformer. His dam is by More Than Ready, who is from the Halo/Hail to Reason sire line, with Fappiano on her dam side.

With her uphill balanced build, strong shoulder, kind eye, clean legs and nice movement, Secret Dixie Dance is a diamond in the rough with great potential for many disciplines. Look past her not yet shed out winter coat, and focus on how great she can look when filled out and a top line developed. She is very lightly raced, with only 11 starts and one win, so there’s little wear and tear on her. She has spent most of her time hanging out at her owner’s farm, and she has now let her trainer know that the track life is no longer what she wants. He said that she is excellent to handle and work with around the barn and in morning training, but she hates the starting gate. In a recent race, she got startled while loaded in the gate, and got some superficial scrapes on her hind legs that are healing well — but now she definitely wants nothing more to do with the gate. So it’s time to let her find a new career.  She posed perfectly for her photos, jogged quietly showing good balance, and enjoyed the attention. We also watched the video of her winning race and observed a fluid balanced gallop with a flat kneed reach. With her nice movement and build, we can see her doing well in lower level eventing, hunter paces, the show hunter ring, or as an all around fun trail and pleasure horse.

Homebred Xena’s Cat is unraced and is not showing enough promise at this point in her career for her doting owners/breeders to continue on with her race training.  Xena has a compact and very well proportioned build and, although she is likely to still be growing, may top out a tad taller but she won’t be a big horse. Because she hasn’t been in training for about a week she was quite on the muscle this morning but we are confident that, once off the track and in an environment that she prefers, she will settle right down and be a cute prospect for retraining your way.  Xena is very good in turnout with her buddies and has had the winter turned out on her owner’s farm. She is said to be without vices and is sound. We think this cute, well-built filly with a nice toe-pointing jog is a promising young prospect for just about any discipline.

This beautiful, solid-bodied and well balanced homebred young daughter of Alphabet Soup, after only 5 starts, is letting her owner/breeder/trainer know that racing is just not her best game.  But with her excellent conformation, very nice movement, good temperament, and great sport horse bloodlines, we think she can excel in many other disciplines.  She is clean legged, described as sound, and she was perfectly behaved for her photo session.  Jogged by one of our volunteers, she displayed very nice balanced movement with excellent behavior.  We pegged her height as 15.3+ / 16h,. and she is likely to grow some more — we think she will top out at over 16h.  And with her solid body and strong shoulder, she will surely take up the leg of a taller rider. She was turned out all winter at her owner/trainer’s farm, and he said she is very relaxed in that environment, and turns out well with other horses. He says  she gets more nervous in the racetrack environment, although we did not see that in her demeanor with us, as she posed and jogged for us politely.   Her sire, Breeder’s Cup winner Alphabet Soup, is from the Cozzene/Caro sire line,  much coveted in the sport horse world, and he is known for siring later maturing horses who are durable and good jumpers.  Her dam is from the Buckpasser line, which is also known for durable, good brained sport horses.

This stocky, solid bodied and beautiful lady could easily masquerade as a quarter horse or warmblood!  Barbican’s Mist was described by both her owner/trainer and the handler who showed her to us as a sweetheart, a very good girl who is nice to ride, nice to handle, and sound with no history of any injuries or issues.  We admired her kind, sweet expression, her cute face and intelligent kind eye, and her perfect behavior — she definitely won the hearts of our volunteers!  The person who showed her to us has ponied her in morning training and to the races, and told us  she is a kind sweetheart to work with — a horse she wishes she had room for to take on as her own.  Barbican Mist came to Finger Lakes and her current owner/trainer in late April, and we were told that she arrived with her feet in neglected overgrown condition. They pulled her shoes and trimmed her feet just two days before we photographed her, and she was still a bit foot sore moving barefoot on the pavement, so we got walk video only.  But we watched videos of her winning races and observed lovely balanced, fluid and flat kneed movement at the gallop and trot.  We think Barbican Mist could go in any direction — best friend and trail companion, show hunter, lower level eventing, barrels, pleasure –whatever you want!  She is a granddaughter of A.P Indy on her sire’s side, and of Blushing Groom and Raja Baba on her dam’s side.  We think she is one of the bargains of this year or any year! Pay close attention when everyone at the track tells you a horse is “amazing,” “awesome,” a “class act” !  West College is greatly admired by everyone at Finger Lakes, from grooms, exercise riders,  pony riders, other trainers, the gate crew, to the paddock and racing office staff,  as an all around big hearted, hard trying, classy, much admired horse — the type  that make thoroughbreds so coveted for their intelligence, heart, class, and athleticism.  After a successful career through which he held up “as sound as a dollar,” he recently raced on a mucky sloppy track and came back with a slight low bow in his tendon — he has been on stall rest for two weeks, and the vet says with proper rehab he should be 100% for any discipline.  This recent minor injury presents a rare opportunity for the discerning experienced horse person to get a big gorgeous gelding universally described as “awesome” for a true bargain price.  His groom sang his praises as he showed West College to us — he said he is a super good guy, never does anything wrong, is wonderful to work with.  We admired his long legged, strong shouldered elegance, and his intelligent, alert expression — he showed off what is called “the look of eagles” at the track.  We asked for a walk video only — due to the recent tendon injury, we did not want West College to jog on pavement. We did watch videos of some of his many winning races, and observed big strided athletic movement, with good push from behind.  He is by Closing Argument, from the Valid Appeal/In Reality sire line, and his dam is from the Gone West line — great sport horse breeding.  A very good hone is essential for this very special , much loved horse.

This adorable young guy has had a few workouts on the track but has shown no aptitude and was never raced. He is not tattooed. Tom is currently at the track, but has been wintered at the farm where he enjoys turnout with friends. Tom is described as a stall “runner” and would likely benefit from turnout time to help relax this behavior. A new home with ample turnout with a buddy would be a must for Tom. He has a gorgeous, uphill build with a long reaching walk and demonstrated correct, sound movement when he could be coaxed into trotting. On a blustery spring day when most horses were quite “up,” Tom demonstrated a laid back, quiet, gentlemanly demeanor coming off the walker for his meet and greet. Adorable markings, a kind eye, and movement to boot? Don’t miss this one, he surely won’t last long!
