Located at a farm adjacent to the Finger Lakes Race Track in Farmington, NY (near Rochester, NY). Martino’s trainer stopped on as we headed out and told us about this sweet gelding who is on a farm adjacent to the track. Martino has been a successful race horse with a decent record of 25 starts, 2 wins, 6 seconds and 2 thirds. Alas he sustained a hind sesamoid injury last March (2018) and has been successfully rehabbed. He was given the appropriate amount of stall rest, hand walking, is currently being turned out in a round pen and ready to be restarted. We think he could be a fun project because his brain is probably in a great place to transition easily to life at a farm. Martino’s handler stated that he is good to work with on the ground and has been a good patient. His xrays, both at time of injury and the recent ones indicating he is ready to restart, are available for review by your veterinarian. Martino has also had his shots and, of course, has a current Coggins. His trainer thinks that he would be suitable for low level disciplines and would look equally as good under English or Western tack.

Oh my, Oh gorgeous…. think of the fun you can have with this sweet mare’s name!  Oh is a much loved barn favorite because she is kind, beautiful, and great to work with.  She is a homebred, and her owner/breeder wants to find her an excellent home.  Oh did not come to the track until last year, and after one race last summer, she had some filling in her left front tendon.  They ultrasounded it and found a very small tear, so they stopped on her and completely rehabbed the tendon.  Oh came back to the track in March, but after a workout there was a slight filling in the tendon, but she never was lame or sore on it.  They decided to be extra careful and stop her race training, and find her a new career.  On the day we photographed Oh, she had been out of training for over a month, just walking in the shedrow, so she was a bit excited to be outside, although very respectful of her handler.  She showed off nice suspension and balance with a lofty trot.  Her handler says that she is a lovely mover, very nice to gallop, with smooth lead changes, and that she has been ridden in an indoor arena as well.  Oh also trailers well.  Given how slight her tendon injury was, and how carefully it has been managed, Oh should be fine for careers less strenuous than racing.  She is pretty enough to excel in the show ring, and her movement suggests that dressage could be a good outlet for her.  Oh is by Rule, a son of Roman Ruler, out of a mare by Storm Bird.  An excellent home with references is essential for this special and much loved mare.

What a sweet, quiet, good guy this “diamond in the rough” cute young gelding is — and he is just begging to get a great new home where he can be your best friend and enjoy trail riding, low level jumping, and life less strenuous than the racetrack. Leading Storm has bounced around from trainer to trainer — he started his career running well but not quite being able to win on the tough NY circuit, then last summer he was sent to Finger Lakes for softer competition.  He won a  race at Finger Lakes — still his only win in 14 starts — and was promptly claimed by a trainer  who was new to Finger Lakes.  This former trainer did diagnostic x-rays after he claimed Leading Storm. The x-rays revealed a small non-displaced knee chip, and the vets said he could keep racing.  We listed Leading Storm  late last summer for that former trainer, when Leading Storm was sleek and shiny.  That trainer raved about what a kind, quiet, good mannered sweet horse he was.  But then that trainer had to leave town, and when no one had stepped up to give Leading Storm a new non-racing home, he was passed on to yet another trainer at Finger Lakes, who raced him several more times until the end of the race meet last fall.  He put Leading Storm on a farm for the winter, and has put him back into race training this spring. But after a recent workout his knee bothered him for a few days, so it is now time to find him a new home. On the day we photographed him, Leading Storm had not yet shed out his winter coat, and he was missing his front shoes. But his knee was cold, and he jogged well despite missing two shoes, showing very cute movement. The groom who handled him said that he is a very good boy, always kind and easy to work with.  Because Leading Storm has raced and trained on the knee chip without major issues, we think that in a less strenuous lower level career he will be fine, and will be a trusted friend who will forever reward the person who steps up for him.  He has good balanced conformation, a very kind eye and friendly expression, and we think that once he is cleaned up, gets some good grooming to help him shed out his winter coat, and gets his feet done with shoes back on, he will quickly return to the shiny boy we saw last summer.  He is by Forty Tales, a son of Tale of the Cat, out of a mare by Lion Cavern out of a Relaunch dam.

This young daughter of the great Big Brown is very feminine and elegant, and her groom says she is very sweet and kind, a good girl who never puts a hoof wrong, and is very easy to work around. She is described as very sound, but slow. After 4 starts, she has shown no racing ability. She has a  a bit of a sway back with very high withers, but when we have listed horses in the past with this conformation, we have heard from several  people who have told us that their horses built like this are great jumpers. Don’t let a saddle fitting issue stop you from getting this lovely filly, who has unlimited potential as a sport horse.  JC jogged very kindly on a loose lead and showed very nice fluid movement.  Her legs are clean, and she is still growing. She has no limitations for any new career, and with her sweet agreeable demeanor she should be relatively easy to transition to a new career.  She is by champion Big Brown, who is a grandson of Danzig and Nureyev, and her dam is by Hold that Tiger out of a Lemon Drop Kid mare.

Big East was our first  offering of the day and he was well worth the trip to the track for our official launch of the 2019 meet. One of our volunteers had met this gent last year and absolutely loved him. Those of us who have seen him in the flesh believe that he is a quality horse with tremendous sport potential. Big East was tailing off last year after compiling a decent race record with a relatively modest 28 starts and 11 in the money finishes. While being trained for the 2019 season, Big East bled during one of his workouts and his trainer has decided that now is the time to retire him from racing. It is unlikely that he would continue to have problems with bleeding during activities that are less strenuous than racing, although we would recommend discussing it with your veterinarian. This guy is just too nice to pass up. We were impressed with his size and his big, solid feet, something not always seen in thoroughbreds. He is described as a very chill dude with a mellow attitude about everything. He has prominent withers now and muscling in the neck with a change of activity and training will eventually give him a nice top line. He is described as sound and we saw nothing to give us pause. His legs are cold and tight. He was alert and ready to strut his stuff when we asked for a video of his jog and we liked his nice spring from behind. He’s already had the winter off with minimal training while at the track in these initial weeks after the backside opened up, so he can transition to your training regimen from a refreshed status. We expect that, with a nice young horse that ticks all the boxes, he won’t languish for long. Give a call if you are seriously interested.

Holly’s Halo, 2013 15.3h gray mare.  Located at a farm in Victor NY very close to the Finger Lakes Race Track.

Holly is a much loved homebred who has been with the same owner and trainer her whole life, so she has always enjoyed the best of care.  She is described as an easy going sweetheart, easy and comfortable to ride and gallop, never giving the exercise riders any problems at all.  She is also easy to handle on her owner’s farm over the winters in turnout. Our volunteers first photographed Holly a couple of years ago, before her owner decided to keep racing her, and when we saw her this time, we were impressed with how much she had grown and filled out now that she is fully mature.  She is a very solid bodied girl, who will take up even taller riders’ legs.  Holly is described as very sound, and her legs are clean.  She is now ready to find her new career, because in her first start this spring, she dwelt in the gate at the start and lagged well behind the field, letting her owner and trainer know that she is just not interested in racing anymore.  Holly’s big full sister, Mom’s Chance, is enjoying a successful career in dressage, and we think Holly will adapt as quickly and well to a new career as her sister did.  Holly could go in any direction. We think she would love to go on hunter paces and foxhunts, but if more leisurely trails are what you want to do, Holly would be fine with that.  Holly is by Comeonmom, from the Halo sire line, out of a mare by American Chance, from the Cure the Blues sire line, which brings in another cross of Hail to Reason in addition to that of her sire line. Holly’s owner cares very much that she go to the best of homes that will give her updates, so be prepared to provide references and convince her that you are the right person for Holly!
