Galway Girl, 2013, 15.3+ h., chestnut mare

Located at Finger Lakes Race Track, Farmington, NY (close to Rochester, NY). We first met this sweet and pretty mare last week she was on stall rest so we put her listing on hold for a week. This week, we stopped back to check on her condition and get an update. We’d been told that during her last race (10/14/19), she sustained an undefined LF ankle injury in the sloppy going.  We were very relieved to see that she seemed much more comfortable this week, and that a visible cut on her RH ankle that we’d noted last week also appears to be healing.
We observed her waiting patiently as her legs were hosed off. This well put together mare appeared quiet and sweet. We liked her cute, compact, and balanced proportions. She has a nice long shoulder. She is lightly, but powerfully muscled, keeping her features pretty and feminine. She was cooperative as her handler and volunteers helped to position her feet for her photos. Having been cooped up for a few weeks, and with some distractions on a nearby road, she understandably had a case of the “woo-hoo’s” during her video on the icy road on a very brisk day, although she seemed respectful of her handler.  She did not appear to be sore or favoring her ankle. We were able to glimpse moments of athletic, springy movement with suspension. And she settled down and stood quietly afterwards as we estimated her height.
A former exercise rider who galloped Galway Girl when she was racing at Belmont has reached out to us to tell us that Galway Girl was a complete sweetheart, a very calm and kind filly, lovely to ride — just not racing material.  This former exercise rider tells us that she thinks Galway has such a kind temperament that she could be a kid’s horse, a trail horse, or that she would be good in an equine therapy program.  The very fact that her former rider has tried to follow Galway Girl as she descended the ladder of tracks and trainers over the years, and still loves her and thinks about her, is strong testament to what a sweet kind mare she is, so deserving of  a chance to get the R & R she needs to enjoy a great new life in a loving home. Galway Girl has yet to win in 27 starts, proving accurate the former exercise rider’s assessment that she’s suited for slower pursuits than racing.
Galway Girl  can boast of having a good sport horse pedigree. She is by Noonmark, who is by Unbridled’s Song.  Her stakes winning dam Conquestality is by Conquistador Cielo, and her second dam, a Damascus daughter, is also a stakes winner. She has a sister who produced a graded stakes winner, and another sister produced a horse that FLF placed a couple of years ago, Fridayniteconquest, who was showing great aptitude for eventing.  So Galway should be given consideration as a sport horse broodmare.
Galway Girl urgently needs to find a good home before the Finger Lakes race meet ends for the season.  A good home is essential and references will b e required.
