Mayor of Westwood, 2017 16.1+h chestnut gelding

Located at Finger Lakes Race Track for a few more days then will be at a farm close to the track.
This flashy handsome hunk is going to be a very fancy boy when he grows up, physically and mentally.  After only one race, it is obvious to his connections that racing is not going to be Mayor of Westwood’s game, so they are willing to let him move on to a new career.  Mayor was a $55,000 yearling purchase last fall, so they certainly hoped he would have racing talent; he was working regularly but slowly at Belmont so his trainer sent him to Finger Lakes a couple of weeks ago to see if he would fare better against  softer competition. He raced on Nov. 25, and finished next to last.  Mayor has impressive bone, and an uphill build with a strong shoulder and hindquarters.   Close to 16.2 already, he is going to grow some more and is likely to top out close to or over 16.3.  He had been doing nothing but walking inside the shed row since his race, so when we photographed him outside 4 days later in 20 degree chill,  Mayor was feeling exuberant, but he held it together for his handler and showed signs of lofty movement that made us think he could be a dressage or eventing star. He threw in some impressive leaps when we weren’t  filming, just to show us he can jump!  Mayor has an inquisitive personality, just like the two year old that he is — his handler reported that a few days ago during the night he had escaped under the webbing of his stall, walked down the shed row, pushed open the door to the office, and was found there in the morning playing with things lying on the desk!  So you will probably want to keep this smart escape artist behind a stall door rather than webbing!.  But think what that curious, problem solving brain can do for you when you present dressage moves or cross country questions to him!  This young guy has an outstanding pedigree for sport.  His sire Competitive Edge, is a young grandson of Maria’s Mon, who was ranked as a favorite sport horse sire in an article last year in the RRP’s Off-Track Thoroughbred Magazine. His dam is by More than Ready, who is a Halo grandson, and his dam’s broodmare sire is from the Fappiano line.  Because of his youth and power, we think that Mayor of Westwood will be best suited for an experienced rider who can give him some time to grow up.
