HEADSAIL, aka “Olaf,” 2015 16.3h grey gelding

Image

Olaf is what everyone covets — grey, big, solid boned,  a sweet personality, and a good mover.  We can see him foxhunting, or eating up the cross country course, or impressing the dressage judges. Olaf raced only three times when he was three, showing no aptitude, and was diagnosed with a knee chip.  He was then trained to be a racetrack pony horse, and he has been used in that job by several different people at different tracks.  His current owner who has been using him as a pony horse describes him as a really cool guy, who is loving, likes to cuddle, loves attention and TLC. She says he has been a great pony horse, but that he started developing erratic behavior, and she recenlty fell off of him and was injured, so since hse cannot rwork as a pony rider for a while, she has to find Olaf a new home. She told us that she thinks Olaf would prefer a life where he can get turned out, and will not have to endure the repetitive daily grind of being a track pony.  She reports that he has never been spooky, and has no vices, but she says because he is a big strong horse, she thinks he would be better off with an experienced rider,  The assistant trainer in the barn that Olaf’s owner works for told us that Olaf is great to have in the barn and is a horse who goes to work every day, during morning workouts, and at the races in the afternoon, and doesn’t get tired and just does his job and gallops kindly.  Olaf has solid bone, good big feet, a strong shoulder and hind end, and a kind eye and alert expression.  The assistant trainer could not jog him because he, the human, is lame, so he handed the lead shank over to one of our volunteers, who started out gingerly handling the unfamiliar big grey horse, and then she realized he was a gentleman and she could let him trot along. Olaf showed good movement, with a strong push from behind and some loft to his step.  He has an ideal sport horse pedigree. His sire is Mizzen Mast, who is a son of Cozzene from the Caro sire line. Mizzen Mast has Ribot, Prince John, and Tom Fool close up in his pedigree — stout old thoroughbred stamina lines seen too infrequently in modern US TB pedigrees. Olaf’s dam is by Hennessy out of a Grey Dawn mare. Hennessy offspring are known for good temperaments and jumping ability. Note, that because Olaf has not raced for several years, he is not RRP eligible.
